If you wish, you may also visit our <span class="NewWindow">Main Webpage</span>
When you log on your first character, you will receive an FAQ sheet, but this is our more exhaustive newbie guide!<br>

When you log into the game for the first time, part of you newbie equipment will be a map of your hometown.
There are several things you can do with this map, first, try to LOOK MAP, or EXAMINE MAP.
You should see something similar to this:

The London map also gives you some options for other ways to manipulate it. (Not all hometown maps will have more than one option for looking at it.)
If you type EXAMINE PROPER you should get something like this:

Finally, you can also use this map to TRAIL to your destination. If you type TRAIL you should get something like this:

Now, to find your way to one of the locations listed, you would type TRAIL OUTFITTER, for example.
And you should see something like:

Your map suggests heading east to reach The Outfitters'.

As you move through rooms, you will continue seeing a message with the direction to take towards your destination until you either reach your destination, or type STOP.
Maps are special objects designed to help players follow trails to pre-defined
locations. The ability to use maps and follow a trail requires no skill and is
available to everyone.
You may acquire maps from NPCs or from other players.

MAP EXAMINE (or READ MAP) will tell you more about a specific map: its
quality, its era, and how much information it stores.

MAP LIST will show you locations marked on maps in your possession.

MAP TRAIL <location keyword as it appears on you map> starts you along a
navigational path toward a location. Trailing is different from hunting in
that it is not limited in length, has no lag, and it adjusts itself if you
stray from the path.

MAP STOP stops following the path.

Some maps, especially hometown maps, also offer a design of the area. To be
able to see the design, use LOOK MAP.

Creating your own map and defining locations on it requires special skills.
'----------------------------------------------------------------------'
Ten frequently asked questions are:

1. How do I communicate with other people?

There are a variety of ways you can communicate with other players and the
computer-controlled characters (MOBS) on Legend. To speak to all the people
in the room where you are: use SAY <message>, to communicate with someone
directly who may or may not be in the same room with you: use TELL <person's
name> <message>, and finally, channels are broadcast across the whole mud to
those players who are listening to the channel. See HELP SAY, HELP TELL and
HELP CHANNELS, also see HELP RULES.

2. How do I light my lamp?

Hold it. You only need your lamp at night or in dark/murky places. Lights
only stay lit for a certain period of time, so energy conservation is a good
idea. To see how much fuel your lamp still has type "look in lamp". You can
hold lamps even if you can't see anything else, and they will stay with you
if you die. To tell what time it is, type TIME.

3. Will I die of hunger/thirst? Where can I find food/drink? How do I
regen hp/mana/mv faster?

No, you will simply regen hp/mv/mana slower than normal if you do not eat or
drink. Typically, inns carry food at higher prices, many shops sell food much
cheaper. The corpses of some animals can be carved using the command CARVE
CORPSE to get an edible filet. Each area usually has a fountain for free
water from which you can fill drink containers. Note, some of them may not be
pure and have disastrous affects. To regen hp/mana/mv faster, simply rest or
sleep. See HELP REST, HELP CARVE, HELP FOOD.

4. How do I save my character and equipment? What happens if I am over rent?

You RENT out at an inn instead of quitting with 'QUIT Y'. The amount you can
SAVE is limited by 1000 times your level, with 1000 bonus rent space. You
cannot save until you have played for 30 minutes or achieved level 2. There
is no 'out of pocket' fee for renting equipment. This means you can rent for
as long as you want (up to a month in real life) without worry. After a month
of inactivity, characters can be deleted. If you receive the message
"Saving... FAILED - Some of your items did not save because you are over
rent.", you are over rent and must drop things until you can save
successfully. You may type OFFER to see how much you are over and the rent
values of the items you are carrying. If you are over rent your ability to
gain XP is curtailed until you get your rent below your maximum rent value.
You also will not be able to RENT at an inn and save your progress. When you
are ready to leave the game, simply go to an inn and type RENT.

See also, HELP RENT.

5. How can I delete this character before a month is up? I want to use the
same name?

Characters are automatically deleted if you have not rented yet, and have not
played for a total time of 1 half hour. Simply quitting the game with quit y
will delete the character. If you have gone past this time, ask a department
head or imp to delete your character.

In many cases, you will be told you may want to stick with your current
version for a while longer. After all, having 500 xp total at level 6 is
better than 0 xp at level 1.

6. What happens if I die?

You will come back into the game with just a boat and a light source, if you
had those before you were killed. Your equipment remains in your corpse, so
you should get back to it and retrieve your things. You will lose 1/2 of your
exp to your next level, or a maximum of 750k. Please see HELP DEATH.
Additionally, you can die to deathtraps, please read HELP DT.

7. Where can I practice/train up my stats? When can I see my stats?

HELP PRACTICE explains our rather different skill/spell learning system.
There usually is no ONE place to learn a specific skill. Spells are a bit
more unique. HELP MAGIC explains them. To learn a skill, think of a
mobile/npc who might logically already know the skill and try to locate that
type of mob. When you find someone you think might teach the skill you are
looking for, ASK <mobname> teach or ASK <mobname> learn, and they will list
off any skills they can teach. If they do teach a skill you are interested in
learning, type ASK <mobname> <skillname> to learn the skill. Be sure the
skill is listed in your ALLSKILLS list. It lists the ones you qualify to
learn. Once a skill is learned it is placed in your SKILLS list. HOWEVER,
skills that you no longer qualify for remain in SKILLS, but not in ALLSKILLS.
If you find you are no longer capable of using a skill, check ALLSKILLS to
see that it is still there. HELP SCORE explains when you get to see stats.

8. How come I can't kill something that cons as a 'perfect match' in two
rounds like I can on XYZMud?

Here, perfect match means it should be like fighting a clone of yourself. It
should come out to be about a 50/50 chance of your success. Currently,
consider is only a comparison between your level and the mob's level. Some
will be easier, some will be harder based on stats, equipment, skills, etc.
The judge skill is a more comprehensive comparison of physical attributes.
See HELP CONSIDER.

9. REBOOT? What's that? Do I have to rent? How long will it be down?

A reboot is when the immortals restart the game. It is usually to fix bugs
and/or put in area updates. You do not have to rent. Reboots usually take
about 3 minutes of downtime. However, sometimes there are unforeseen problems
and it may take longer. If it's not back up immediately, try again in a few
minutes. If you log on and very few players are on, you can type TIME and if
the Mud Started Up time is nearly identical to the Mud System Time, it's
likely the mud just crashed or was rebooted and people are just beginning
to return.

10. Just what on earth is this OOC Lounge thing?

OOC stands for Out of Character. Many players hang out there to kick back,
talk to other people without too much spam, and relax. There are also a TON
of boards to read. Read HELP BOARD. Many of these will contain relevant
information to the game and to you as a player. To get back to the normal
game, simply type IC [in character]. See HELP OOC.

This FAQ is also given to each new character.
# Yes you do want color, type yes. Then yes again, extended attributes are fine.
# Pick a gender, we only have two at this time.
# This is the fun part. Your hometown determines your abilities, magic users come from Arabian Nights, great warriors from Medieval Germany, and folks that use guns hail from London or San Francisco. Since we're brand new, hit 5 for now. We'll go to London.
# If you've ever played Dungeons and Dragons this should be familiar. Today, we'll start a gun fighter so we'll enter 345126. This will select the order of Dexterity, Constitution, Perception, Strength, Mind, Spirit. As a gun fighter you'll want to be able to dodge, have some hit points and shoot straight. So we put those up front.
# Read the code of conduct, answer Yes, press enter through until you can type: [1] Enter the game.

INVENTORY lists your inventory (things not worn or held). It is often

INVENTORY BAG lists all bags in your possession and their contents (and
the contents of their contents, et cetera). INVENTORY FULL is INVENTORY BAG
plus all unequipped items (bags and non-bags).

You begin the game with a small bundle of equipment. Be sure to check your
LOOK, well, looks at something and sees what you can see. You can also look in
many types of items like light sources to tell how much fuel they have, look in
guns to see how many shots they currently have loaded, look in vehicles to see
how much fuel they have.

LOOK <direction> will often give you clues if you're about to walk into danger
or help you get your bearings. Not all exits have look at descriptions but the
important ones should.

LOOK ROOM will always give you the room description and its contents even if
you have BRIEF configured to only give room titles as you move around.

EXAMINE is short for 'LOOK container' followed by 'LOOK IN container'.

NOTE: When you LOOK IN CORPSE, many items that have some benefits to them
(other than ac) are indicated with an asterisk in a corpse (in the auto-help
color) and might bear out further INSPECTion. For experienced players
and high-level areas, you should still examine everything, especially in
a new area as this flag is aimed towards mostly stats that newer
players are unfamiliar with.
'----------------------------------------------------------------------'
Legend does not support an automatic donate command, but you can feel free to
put objects in which you are not interested, but think others might be in the
lost and found boxes found in various inns.

Several areas also have places where you can get rid of unwanted items for
small rewards.

You can also offer things for sale or for charity on the auction channel.

Items put into a lost and found box are considered 'donated'. That means a
flag 'ITEM_DONATED' will be applied to them. The intention of this procedure
is to avoid any misuse of 'donated' equipment (e. g. looting those boxes and
selling the eq off for the pure purpose of money gathering). The
'ITEM_DONATED'-flag is basically a timer that is set upon the corresponding
item. This timer will count down wherever the item is, and will remove the
'ITEM_DONATED'-flag as soon as it ran out.

While the 'ITEM_DONATED'-flag is active, the timer will not be modified.
Putting such an item back into a lost and found box again will not modify the
timer. Nevertheless, a new timer will be applied if a timer ran out and the
item is 're'-donated, i. e. put into a lost and found box again.

While the 'ITEM_DONATED'-flag is active, items can not be sold or given to
sellers nor can they be auctioned. Also if you store items carrying that flag
in your house their housing
BUY buys an object from a shopkeeper. The appropriate amount of currency is
automatically deducted from your carried balance. You can also use BUY #.<item>
to get the correct one on the list. Use PREVIEW #. <item> first to make sure you
are looking at the one you want.

In addition, you can purchase multiple quantities of an item at one time,
assuming the vendor or shop stocks a quantity of that item. The format for
buying in quantity is BUY #*<item>. For example, 'buy 3*torch' would purchase
three torches from the shop or vendor.

LIST lists the objects the shopkeeper will sell you. If there is more than one
shopkeeper present in a room, you can type LIST followed by the name of the
shopkeeper whose inventory you wish to look over. The following commands (BUY,
SELL, VALUE, HAGGLE) also work similarly if there is more than one shopkeeper
present.

SELL sells an object to a shopkeeper. You will be automatically credited with
the price that the item commands.

You can also buy from multiple shopkeepers at one time, but all shopkeepers
you wish to buy from must be in the same room.

VALUE asks the shop keeper how much he or she will buy the item for.

The PREVIEW command allows you to examine equipment prior to buying
the item. Preview will tell you how much the item will cost, its rent,
its slot and what the item looks like when it's on the ground. Some items,
particularly furniture items or those intended for housing, don't have long
descriptions. This is to cut down on the spam of a room, since the items
will not be seen if you LOOK. Items without a long description can still
be interacted with, however. Preview will also report on the type of item and
its material type if applicable.

TRADE has you try to exchange one item that you possess for another that a
shopkeeper has for sale. The item you are trading must be worth more than the
item you are trying to obtain.

The HAGGLE skill provides an alternative way to buy items.

Please note that stealing from a shopkeeper renders him or her unable to
produce more of that item. Also, you are very likely to get caught in the
attempt.

Most areas of LegendMud will have an inn. When you are ready to leave, the best way to ensure
your items are saved is to RENT out at an inn. The amount of items you are able to
save and rent out with is based on your level. Each item in Legend is assigned a rent value.
You are able to rent 1000 times your level, plus 1000. So, at level 1 you are able to rent
2000 rent-worth of items. By level 50, you can rent 5100 rent-value worth of items.

Game Play
Congratulations, you're in! You stand in The Jolly Beggar, the Inn for Industrial London. Type 'L' to LOOK around. That's what's in the room with you. Then, type i to see your Inventory you will have a knife, a lamp, a FAQ, canteen, map and a piece of bread. For now, type 'wear knife'. You are now equipped to fight.

Type E to head East. In Legend, the world is comprised of rooms that lie in a grid of cardinal direction, you move between rooms by typing E, N, W, or S to head in that direction. If it's dark, then it's nighttime. type 'wear lamp' this will light the lamp for you so you can see. Type 'L' again.

In the room, one of the things in that room will be 'A silvery grey bird is searching for food here.'

Type 'con pigeon' this will help you CONSIDER the pigeon. In this case, your chosen opponent is 'The Perfect Match!' which means, you can take this one down. Type kill pigeon.

After a couple rounds of combat you should have the fulfilling message of:
A pigeon falls to the ground dead, never to fly again, victim to your knife.
A pigeon is DEAD!!
You receive 308 experience.
You hear a pigeon's death cry.

Congratulations, your career has begun. Type 'sc' to open up your SCORE. This will show you not only your statistics but also your Experience and how much more to level. In this case, you have 1292 yet to go for your next level.

At this point, wander around town looking for pigeons, rats and cats to kill. If you see any other animals or people be sure to CONSIDER them before you attack them. Anything that isn't The Perfect Match! I encourage you to stay away from for now.

As you fight, be aware of your Hitpoints listed on your prompt as HP. MA is Mana and MV is Movement. For now, just make sure your HP stays above 0 or you'll die and if your movement gets too low you may not be able to move until it regenerates.

If your HP or Move is low, type REST. This will have your character sit down and will increase your regeneration speed.

London is a pretty safe town except for the Vampire of course. For now, don't go North at St. Stephen's Street and Harbor Row. Everywhere else is safe!

While you wander around town, you may run into people. If so, you can SAY to them if they're in the same room. If you'd like to communicate with just one other person not in the same room you can send them a TELL. Finally, if you want to chat with the entire MUD please use CHAT.

If you get hungry or thirsty, type LIST in the inn. Samuel Norton has a selection of food and beverage for you. If your lamp goes out, he will let you BUY one of those as well.

----
Back to Main Page

Next Steps
Do not be afraid to send a tell, a say or a chat if you need help with in-game information. The help files are all extensive, type help then your question and more often then not there will be information.

When you are ready to stop playing the game for the day you will need to RENT at the local Inn.

When you've killed enough pigeons, rats and cats to level, please proceed to Level 2

To exit the game and keep your possessions, you must find an inn or a friendly
house and RENT there. Inns are centrally located in many cities, and you may
have begun in an inn when you first entered the game. If you have any doubt as
to whether a particular location serves as an inn, try OFFER.

OFFER gives a detailed list of your possessions: the number of each item, their
rent values, the total rent values for each item and for all items, and the
limit on what you may rent. Some items are not rentable; these items appear (in
parentheses). OFFER also shows whether you can RENT in your location.

OFFER can be used anywhere. RENT can only be used in certain inns and houses.

You may rent up to 1000 gold worth of equipment per level of your experience,
plus a base 1000 gold worth. An easy formula to use when attempting to find
what you are capable of renting is (1000 * (your level+1)). Any combination
of equipment within this limit is allowed. You do NOT have to pay any gold to
rent. Rent value is simply a measure of how much your experience entitles you
to keep.

OFFER SHORT will give you the total value of the equipment you have and the
maximum you can keep, and whether you can rent.

You can change the order in which your possessions are shown. Use "OFFER BY
TYPE" to order by item type, or "OFFER BY COST" to order by rent cost. "OFFER
BY NAME" is the default. You can put a "-" before TYPE, COST, or NAME to
reverse the order: to show the most expensive things first, use "OFFER BY
-RENT".

You can limit the display to items matching certain keywords just by adding
those keywords to the command. "OFFER EARRING" shows all items that match the
keyword "earring". "OFFER BAG" shows all items that match "BAG", as well as
their contents.

You can limit the display to items of a certain type by using "OFFER TYPE
<type>". The type name is the same as what the IDENTIFY spell shows.

You can combine "TYPE <type>", "BY <whatever>", and keywords in a single
command. For example: "OFFER BAG SACK BY RENT" shows all bags and sacks, and
orders by rent cost.

Bankers are scattered throughout the game. There is one in each hometown, and
they generally advertise their services on the local information boards.

DEPOSIT will place your money into the bank.

WITHDRAW allows you to withdraw your money for a small fee that is deducted
from the amount withdrawn.

STATEMENT will tell you the current account balance(s) and any housing costs.
You do not need to be a banker to view your statement, unlike the other banker
commands you can use statement anywhere.

INQUIRY is an alternate command for statement.

With the exception of statement and inquiry, you must be at a banker to use
these commands.

Your balance will remain the same if you die, so it's a good idea to deposit
money so you won't be destitute if you die. Also, every 400 gp that you carry
weighs 1 kg, so you will be less encumbered if you deposit regularly. Please
note: bankers keep a small percentage of the amount for all withdrawals.

If you are in a clan, you may deposit money into your clan account. However,
the money may only be used by the GM to purchase housing. Money can not be
withdrawn from the clan account. If the clan is dissolved, any money in the
clan account is lost. You may also set up a personal TITHE percentage to have
funds automatically deposited into your clan account, or your GM may have set
a minimum percentage for members to contribute out of each deposit to the clan.

When you want to transfer all of the money in your posession or in your
account, you can use DEPOSIT ALL, WITHDRAW ALL, or CLANDEPOSIT ALL. This
works with currency, too -- e.g., DEPOSIT ALL DOLLARS.

Note: you do not need to specify currency when dealing with gold coins.

BANKTRANSFER allows you to transfer currency between your character's bank
account and your account bank account. (Note, you must be level 10 to use
banktransfer) The banktransfer command can be used anywhere, it does not
have to be at a banker. Bantransfer a positive amount will take money out
of your character's bank account and put it into your account bank account.
Banktransfer a negative amount will transfer currency out of your account
bank account into the character's bank account.

For example, BANKTRANSFER 100k Will deposit 100k into your account bank account.
BANKTRANSFER -100k, however, will take 100k from your account bank account and
deposit it into your character's bank account.
Syntax: sell <object1 shopkeeper1>, <object2 shopkeeper2>

Shops that are not open will tell you what time they will reopen.

Also, you are very likely to get caught in the
attempt.

**Note: - Items that are considered DONATIONS can not be sold or given to a
vendor

__ __
of the game to the entrance menu, where you have several out-of-character

If you rent or die you will normally re-enter the game at the last inn you
rented from. You can set your rent location without exiting the game using
RENT SET. See HELP RENT SET for more information. To check your current rent
spot, type HOME.

When you move from one area to another, it is often a good idea to RENT or RENT
SET at the local inn.

RENT SHORT is the same as RENT, but without the detailed equipment listing. RS
will work in place of rent short.

RENT will also accept any of the ordering or limiting options that work with
OFFER. If you always want to rent or get offers the same way, you can customize
it with an alias.

For example: 'ALIAS COMMAND RENT RENT BY COST' will show you expensive items
last each time you rent. See HELP ALIAS for details.

Inns around Legend tend to share things in common. Most have a shop, banker, and a
donation box.
